An off-duty police officer from Excelsior Police Station managed to apprehend a suspect after following a tip-off on suspected theft in progress.
Excelsior police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma said on Saturday at about 16:20 Constable Thabo Ketele, who was off duty, received a call from a community member about suspected theft in progress at Drift farm which is about 12 kilometres on the outskirts of Excelsior.
He immediately drove in his private car to the farm and upon arriving he left his car at the gate and tactically approached the crime scene.
The suspected thief ran upon seeing the off-duty cop.
“The suspect was apprehended and upon inspecting the crime scene the off-duty police officer found 10 corrugated irons that were allegedly taken off the store room and ready to be transported. The farm owner arrived and a case of theft of corrugated iron valued R1 350 was opened for investigation,” said Xuma.
The apprehended suspect made his first court appearance today on Monday before Excelsior Magistrates’ Court and the case was remanded to next week Monday for further investigation and bail application.
