Free State-born comedian and radio personality Tieho Khakhau has been nominated in the 2017 Savannah Comics’ Choice Awards under the Audience Choice category and the Comic of the Year category.
In keeping with a celebration of the breaking down of comedy borders and amplifying the work of some comedians this year to protect free speech for all local comics, the theme for this year’s Awards is “The Freedom of Funny”. This theme talks to the universal, borderless and inclusive nature of comedy, according to the Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Department in the Free State.
Khakhau has shared stages with many esteemed South African comedians such as Mashabela, Skhumba, Salesman, and David Kau to mention a few. He has also starred in a Mzansi Magic short film Abo Chomie which was directed by Free State’s very own David Kau.
In 2016 Khakhau was honored as the closing act for the MACUFE Comedy Festival and received a standing ovation from the audience. He was further featured in the 2016 Blacks Only comedy show. To vote for Tieho Khakhau, the public can SMS 77269 to 45757.
“In the previous financial year the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation committed itself to develop Free State Film-makers and comedians to ensure that we have more films and professional comedy developed from the Free State Province.
In this regard we collaborated with skilled and experienced national comedians to hone the skills of our local comedians. Tieho Khakhau is a shining example to emerge out of this initiative” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
Other Free State comedians who have been nominated in the 2017 Savannah Comics’ Choice Awards are Tumi Morake and David Kau. To vote for Tumi Morake the public can SMS 11353 to 45757 and to vote for David Kau SMS 15251 to 45757.
